Can Decision-Making Actually Be Trained?

"She just has a high basketball IQ."
"He has all the physical tools, but he doesn't make good decisions."
Comments like these are common in basketball. They are often used to explain why one player consistently performs under pressure while another struggles to translate their talent into meaningful game performance. Decision-making is frequently viewed as something players either possess naturally or never fully develop, almost as if it were an innate quality rather than a skill that can be improved. As a result, coaches often dedicate significant time to refining shooting technique, passing accuracy, defensive footwork, and physical conditioning while assuming that better decisions will simply come with experience.
Over the past year, while researching decision-making in basketball for our systematic review, I found myself questioning that assumption. If technical skills can be developed through deliberate practice and physical qualities can be improved through training, why should decision-making be any different? More importantly, what does the evidence actually tell us about how players learn to make better decisions?
The answer, perhaps unsurprisingly, is more complex than a simple yes or no. Decision-making can absolutely be trained, but not in the same way we teach shooting mechanics or ball handling. Unlike technical skills, decision-making cannot be developed through repetition alone. Instead, it emerges from repeated exposure to environments that require players to perceive information, interpret what is happening around them, and adapt their actions to constantly changing situations. In other words, decision-making is not something coaches can simply tell players to improve; it must be experienced.
Decision-Making Begins Before the Ball Is Released
When people talk about decision-making, they often reduce it to the moment a player chooses whether to shoot, pass, or drive. While those choices are certainly part of the process, they are only the final outcome of a much longer sequence.
Every possession begins with perception. Players continuously scan the court, identify defensive positioning, recognize teammates' movements, evaluate available space, and process information such as the shot clock, game situation, and score. Only after interpreting all of these variables can they decide which action offers the greatest chance of success.

This is one reason basketball is such a demanding sport. Unlike closed skills, where movements can be rehearsed under stable and predictable conditions, basketball presents a new problem every few seconds. Defenders react differently, passing lanes appear and disappear, teammates make unexpected movements, and opportunities exist only briefly before they vanish. Successful players are not simply executing techniques; they are constantly solving problems.
Recognizing this changes the way we think about coaching. Rather than viewing decision-making as an isolated ability, it becomes clear that it is deeply connected to perception, anticipation, and the ability to interpret information under pressure.
Why Technical Excellence Doesn't Always Transfer to Games
Traditional basketball practices have long relied on repetition, and for good reason. Repetition remains one of the most effective ways to introduce new techniques and refine fundamental skills. Young players need repeated opportunities to develop proper shooting mechanics, improve their passing accuracy, and build confidence with the basketball before they can apply those skills in more complex situations.
The challenge arises when repetition becomes disconnected from the game itself.
If every pass is made without defensive pressure, every shot comes from exactly the same location, and every offensive movement follows a predetermined pattern, players become increasingly proficient at performing those actions in controlled environments. What they do not necessarily develop is the ability to recognize when those skills should be used during competition.
Most coaches have experienced this firsthand. A player who rarely misses during shooting drills suddenly hesitates when a defender closes out. A point guard who executes passing patterns perfectly in practice struggles to recognize the correct passing window during a game. Another player may appear technically excellent during isolated drills yet struggle whenever the game becomes unpredictable.
These situations are rarely the result of poor technique alone. More often, they highlight the difference between performing a movement and making an effective decision under pressure. Basketball is ultimately not a sport of perfect execution; it is a sport of adapting execution to constantly changing circumstances.

What the Research Suggests
One of the clearest findings from our systematic review was that decision-making develops most effectively when practice resembles the game itself. Across the studies we reviewed, interventions that incorporated representative learning environments, particularly small-sided games and activities that manipulated task constraints, consistently demonstrated positive effects on players' tactical decision-making.
What makes these approaches effective is not that they introduce completely new drills, but that they place players in situations where they must continuously observe, interpret, and respond to information. Instead of rehearsing predetermined solutions, athletes are challenged to discover solutions that emerge naturally from the environment.
This distinction is important because basketball rarely rewards memorization. Every possession presents different problems, and players who consistently perform well are those who have learned to recognize patterns rather than simply repeat movements. Practice, therefore, should not only develop technical skills but also expose players to the same uncertainty they will experience during competition.
Decision-Making Is Learned Through Experience
One misconception I encountered while researching this topic is the belief that decision-making can be improved primarily through instruction. Film sessions, tactical discussions, and whiteboard explanations certainly have an important role within the coaching process. They help players understand concepts, recognize patterns, and reflect on previous performances.
However, understanding a decision and making that decision under pressure are two very different things.
Players become better decision-makers by making decisions.
That statement may seem obvious, but it fundamentally changes the way we think about practice design. Every activity either encourages players to perceive information and solve problems, or it removes those opportunities entirely. The more representative the learning environment becomes, the greater the likelihood that improvements will transfer from practice to competition.
This is why ecological dynamics and the constraints-led approach have become increasingly influential in modern coaching. Rather than separating technical skills from tactical understanding, these approaches encourage coaches to create environments in which both develop simultaneously. Players are not simply learning how to perform a movement; they are learning when, where, and why that movement is appropriate.

What This Means for Coaches
Perhaps the most encouraging takeaway from both the research and my own experience studying this topic is that improving decision-making does not require coaches to redesign every practice session or constantly search for new drills.
Instead, it often begins with asking a different question.
Rather than planning practice around "What drill should I run today?", coaches might begin by asking, "What decisions do I want my players to make?"
Once that objective is clear, the learning environment can be shaped accordingly. Adjusting the size of the playing area, creating numerical advantages or disadvantages, modifying the scoring system, limiting dribbles, or introducing time pressure all influence the information players must process and the decisions they are required to make.
These changes may appear small, but they fundamentally alter what players experience during practice. The drill itself often remains exactly the same; what changes is the learning opportunity it provides.
That shift in thinking has probably influenced my own perspective on coaching more than anything else I've studied over the past year.
Final Thoughts
So, can decision-making actually be trained?
Based on both the scientific evidence and everything I learned while researching this topic, I believe the answer is yes. However, improving decision-making is not about giving players a collection of correct answers to memorize. It is about repeatedly placing them in environments where they must observe, interpret, adapt, and solve problems for themselves.
The longer I have studied decision-making, the more convinced I have become that one of the coach's greatest responsibilities is not simply teaching skills but designing environments where learning can naturally occur. Technical ability will always remain essential, but basketball has never been only about executing movements. It is about recognizing opportunities, responding to uncertainty, and making effective decisions when the game becomes unpredictable.
Ultimately, that may be one of the most important distinctions in coaching. We are not simply preparing players to perform drills; we are preparing them to solve problems.
On the Court
At your next practice, resist the temptation to judge success by how many shots your players make or how smoothly a drill runs. Instead, observe how many meaningful decisions your players are required to make throughout the session. Are they constantly reading defenders, adjusting to teammates, and solving new problems, or are they simply repeating movements they already know?
Sometimes the most valuable change you can make isn't introducing a new drill. It's creating an environment that asks better questions of your players.
